Press Release on conversion of PIO cards to OCI cards" dated 27 September 2018.

PRESS RELEASE 

Government of India had advised conversion of all Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cards to Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards by December 31, 2017.

In this context, it was further informed that as per ICAO guidelines, from 1 Oct 2018, only machine readable travel documents will be acceptable internationally. Hence PIO cards, which are not machine readable will not be permitted for travel purpose w.e.f. Oct 1, 2018. All PIO card-holders are advised to take note of this to avoid any inconvenience at airports from Oct 1, 2018.
