Prerana – for differently abled children

PRERANA

The Indian Consulate under their Culture wing has initiated a venture ‘Prerana’ to support families having differently abled individuals.
The main activities planned by Prerana in the near future are C4C, Manthan, Awareness programs, etc.

C4C is a collaborative effort with a few mainstream schools to encourage interaction of differently abled children with their mainstream peers. Some of the C4C partnering schools are Gems Modern Academy, Delhi Private School, Sharjah, The Millenium School, etc. C4C provides a platform for children to interact with each other and work together in various activities like art, outdoor sports, music and dance.

Manthan is a monthly interactive session aimed at empowering parents, siblings, professionals and volunteers with knowledge on how best to help the differently abled individuals in their care. Experts in the field are invited to address the group. Parents and professionals get to network under a common platform.

Awareness programs will focus on showcasing the talents of differently abled individuals and also increasing acceptance in society through talks in various forums in the community.
Prerana aims at understanding the needs of the families and planning activities to provide the required help.

“Manthan – a churning of ideas”

Prerana conducted an event called Manthan – a churning of ideas on 29th May 2015 at the Indian Consulate Auditorium where Urmimala Sinha, a clinical psychologist with 15 years of experience addressed the topic “Coping Strategies for families with differently abled individuals”.The event was presided by Smt Neeta Bhushan, Deputy Chief of Mission and Head of Chancery. There were around 50 participants and all the parents who attended appreciated the talk. There was an informative sharing session in the end where parents could openly network with other parents and professionals in the field. While the parents attended the talk, their children enjoyed the painting activities organised for them.

Prerana plans to regularly conduct Manthan meetings once a month from September 2015.

Prerana conducted an event called ” Manthan – a churning of ideas” on Friday, 18th September 2015 at the Indian Consulate Auditorium from 5 – 7 pm where Ms. Manasi Ghate, a Nutritionist with more than 10 years of experience in providing care to children & adults who are differently abled, to make healthy choices in their lives, spoke on the topic “Eating Out…Eating Right” and enlightened the audience with the knowledge on what food choices to make when eating out, making healthy decisions when planning meals at home and outside, how to motivate children to eat healthy food, etc. The audience consisting of around 25 families and a handful of professionals and volunteers were very motivated and participative resulting in very interactive discussions on related topics. A dedicated team of volunteers helped keep the children engaged in art activities while their parents attended the talk. The event also provided an opportunity for parents to meet and interact with other families and professionals in the field.
